Prostate Herbal Medicine
Prostate Herbal medicine has become increasingly available from shops or internet but without specialist
knowledge its quite difficult to decide what is best to take. You can supplement medicines you are taking from your
doctor. Alternatively you may consider a standalone course of herbal medicine especially if you or your doctor feel
you have exhausted all the conventional help on offer, or are frustrated at how long it is taking to get your condition
resolved, which can sometimes be true of prostatitis where symptoms and discomfort seem to go on forever.
Before combining prostate herbal medicine with treatments from your doctor or consultant it is important to seek the advice of
a Hydes qualified medical herbalist. If you wish they will work with your GP or consultant and ensure there are no adverse
interactions. Hydes prepare their own herbal medicines from raw herb to ensure quality and consistancy of strength. Each
prescription is dispensed from our on-site pharmacy.
Western Medical Herbalists are trained in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology of orthodox medicines and plants, clinical
practice and diagnosis. Fully qualified Medical Herbalists have undergone a minimum of 500 hours clinical experience
under the supervision of a qualified practicing Herbalist. It is very important to ensure that any herbalist you see
is fully qualified.
Saw Palmetto is a well documented prostate herb often used for prostatitis, BPH, and prostate cancer. It stops spasmodic
discomfort, is anti-inflammatory, and reduces androgen receptor stimulation. Like Dutasteride, it inhibits 5’alpha
reductase by blocking the production of 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone from testosterone preventing the obstructive symptoms
of BPH such as urinary retention, and helps to reduce the size of the prostate. In the clinic we recommend combining
saw palmetto with Dutasteride as it can allay some of its side effects. Generally we adjust our treatments to target
the different aspects of Prostate disease, for example, we can combine saw palmetto with Echinacea for chronic urinary
infections and prostatitis and saw palmetto with cats claw or red clover for prostate cancer. In all cases a detailed
consultation takes place beforehand to consider all aspects of treatment and your existing condition and drug regimes
before prescribing herbal treatment. Your herbalist will also monitor your progress through the course of treatment
because, as with any prescription medicine each patient may react differently and its important to tailor the medicines
to achieve the best outcome for each individual.
