Founded 1908 High Blood Pressure - Hypertension

High Blood Pressure or ‘Hypertension’ is usually defined as having a sustained blood pressure of 140/90mmHg or above. 40% of adults in Britain are affected by high blood pressure which is often symptomless and therefore is often only diagnosed during a routine check up. In some cases when the pressure gets very high symptoms such as headaches, eye problems and chest pains maybe present. High blood pressure is a risk factor for serious cardiovascular disease such as heart disease or a stroke.

How we can help:

Hydes Herbal Clinic will carry out a full health history and physical examination where we will check your blood pressure, listen to your heart and check your circulation. We will also check your blood sugar and blood iron levels and we have cholesterol tests available that will give you a full breakdown of your lipid profile (i.e. good fats and bad fats). We always ask about any medicines that you might be taking from your Doctor and can prescribe alongside these, and if you are taking any supplements we will advise as to whether they are suitable.

We will then prescribe a tailor-made herbal medicine for you containing 5-15 different herbs in the form of a liquid medicine, handmade at the clinic to ensure quality and strength. We also have Hyde’s special formulae tablets, and herbal creams and lotions which we use alongside the liquid medicine as necessary. We always offer dietary and l ifestyle advice to optimise your health.

Herbal medicine can be used to treat high blood pressure alone, or in combination with medicine from your Doctor. Please call the clinic on 0116 2543178 to speak to a Consultant and find out more.

Hydes Case History

A 66 year old woman suffering with high blood pressure with average readings of 160/96 mmHg and highs of 177/102mmHg came to Hydes for help to bring her blood pressure back into the normal range. The patient was also suffering with headaches and poor sleep. A full case history was taken and a physical examination carried out where her blood pressure was taken and her heart listened to and circulation assessed. We also carried out a cholesterol test. After the consultation, the patient was prescribed an individual herbal medicine and a carefully selected Hyde’s formulae herbal tablet to treat her raised blood pressure. After 2 months of treatment the patient’s blood pressure has come back within normal range to 130/88mmHg and her treatment continues in order to reduce it even further. She no longer suffers with headaches and her sleep is now good.

High blood pressure or Hypertension means that your heart has to work particularly hard to pump the blood around your body as there is increased resistance in your blood vessels. This can lead to a weakening of the heart over time. High blood pressure can also cause changes and damage to your blood vessel walls which can lead to blockage, clots or life threatening splitting of the vessels..

95% of cases of hypertension are due to an unknown cause and are known as primary or essential Hypertension. 5% of cases are due to an underlying cause such as kidney problems; this is known as secondary hypertension.

Known risk factors for high blood pressure include:

  • Increasing age (blood vessels become less elastic)
